Memorable prix

Outtakes from the first month of my internship:

"Wa punya husband tak mau laki wo. Takut nanti laki pergi intai perempuan wo" - a landlady tells me when I ask her if there were any rooms available.

"Salam Wahid. Bilik yang korang nak sewa tu available lagi tak?" - an SMS by Khael before realizing that Wahid's actually an Algerian guy xD

"Adik, jangan berdiri dekat sangat dengan garisan kuning tu, adik" - Pakcik RapidKL says to me while I'm waiting for an LRT at KLCC.

"Adik, rapat sikit dekat garisan kuning tu, adik" - Pakcik RapidKL, on the next day. Hmph!

"Jangan berdiri dekat dengan pintu" - KLCC elevator. Elevator pun nak marah-marah. Patut la orang KL stress semacam jer...

"Aiya, I forgot to bring my pass card!" - Senior General Manager says after I use my pass card to open the door for him.

"Hari ni Iperintis hantar orang configure PC" - adminsitrative supervisor says to me on my first week here. The people from Iperintis eventually arrived last week.

"Stesen berikutnya - Damai. Next station - Damai" - LRT announcer, moments before the train refuses to stop at Damai.

"Teh tarik kurang manis" - Khael, while ordering at a shop. Moments later, a Nescafe tambah manis reaches my table.

"How do I get to the skybridge?" - Arab tourist asks me, while I'm waiting for Hafizuddin at the lobby.

"How do I get to the skybridge?" - Indian tourist asks me, while I'm talking to a colleague at the lobby.

"Do you know where Zara is?" - British tourist asks me. I don't even know what Zara is, let alone where it is. The only Zara I know is the Perak princess. Turns out Zara's actually a shop.

"Adik, Petrosains buka pukul 9 kan?" - Malaysian tourist asks me, while I'm waiting for a lift.

"A'ah. Pukul 9, pakcik" - Khael, dengan nada confident. I actually haven't got a clue when Petrosains opens.

"Demam ar, bro. Besok MC" - Hafizuddin, the night before he wakes up at 6 and goes to work with me.

"OK. You take an hour to discuss your training schedule. We'll meet back here at 10am" - my manager says on Monday last week. We have yet to discuss the schedule...

Je me sens à

KL isn't all fun and games.

I've got a thousand worries when I'm here. I've got to watch my money, can't simply bloody eat whatever I want. I've got to control the amount of fun I can have. I've got to see if I can afford the things I want to buy. I've got to worry about how I'm going to get home if it rains. I've got to worry about the electricity bill and the water bill.I've got to worry about whether the bloody LRT will even stop at the correct place, since today it just bypassed Damai for some reason or the other.

I've got to worry about moving to a new house, because this area isn't very desirable. I've got to worry about where to park my car, because there's usually not enough space. I've got to worry about my car's tyre, because some assholes decided to go and puncture it in the middle of the night, so I can't use it right now.

I've got to worry about my internship, my daily reports, my training schedule and all that rubbish. I've got to worry about maintaining my sanity, because unlike all my mates who have wonderful systems to build, books to produce, bosses to impress, colleagues to flirt with, presentations to give, I don't have jack squat to do. I just sit there and do slides or type stuff.

I was just hoping for an ounce of understanding. The thought that someone gives a damn. A little moral support, if you will. Tetapi malangnya, sedikit pun tak dapat.

Nice.

Près de la page

Since us interns aren't allowed to access the Skybridge, we decided to find an alternative source of excitement - by taking the lift up as high as we could go. Even though we were visualizing Level 88 in our minds, we had to be content with...

Level 83 - which is the highest floor accessible by common people like ourselves.

From up here, everything looks like little toys...

And this is how close we were to the very top.
Level 88 is a store room, if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway, that's all the pictures I have to show. We had to bagger off double quick because the security there is TIGHT. The security officer's desk on level 83 is right smack in front of the stupid elevator doors. For a brief moment I thought we were about to be arrested and thrown off the balcony or something (dramatic kan?), but thankfully nothing happened...

À la recherche de la perfection

A facilitator once convinced me, during one of the Soaring the Eagle (StE) camps held by Petronas that human beings will always go for what its heart wants the most.

So if all this while you have been looking for something or someone perfect, find something or someone who's perfect. Don't say you don't want to, or you don't need it, or you don't think it's possible. That's because if you settle for something less, one day you'll find yourself yearning for perfection.

Just a thought...

Tomorrow is Monday. Work.
My life is in danger of becoming monotonous :-)

Images et les sons

The following is a brief tour of all the stuff I've seen over the past two weeks.

The greatest LRT station ever built in history. The Dato' Keramat station.
Actually, this isn't even the station I use. The station I use is about 200m further up, called Damai.

Behind this station, there's this eerie looking bridge...

This bridge runs across Sungai Gombak directly underneath the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)

If you cross the bridge and walk past an area that looks absolutely scary, you'll eventually end up on Jalan Ampang, which Hafizuddin demonstrates above with the help of the Royal Thai Embassy above

As we all know, KLCC is also located along Jalan Ampang.

And this is the Planning Department, Development Division, Petronas Carigali

This is hand drawn map of the entire floor. I need to know where everything is because my workstation is the first workstation you see when you get off the elevator, making me the unofficial receptionist.
And to the top right is my security pass. Notice it says "Perkhidmatan". It makes me sound like I'm the plumber or something, which is why I ALWAYS wear it the other way round.
Hahaha xD

I drive to work on occasion, but as you can see, even the car park gets jammed. When this picture was taken, we had just spent 40 minutes rooted to the same spot. I eventually re-parked my car and went back to my office

Jalan Ampang during rush hour is MAD

Which is why I prefer to use this

But no matter what the mode of transportation is, I'll eventually end up back here, in my little corner of Kg. Dato' Keramat, which is populated by a lot of Indonesians

Jusuf Kalla and Wiranto, Calon Presiden & Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia 2009-2014
This picture was taken just outside my house, not in Jakarta.
Told you there were loads of Indonesians here.
I give JK an A+ for effort. Berkempen sampai ke Malaysia. Bagus2...

And finally, this is how we use the Internet here at home.
After conducting online research, we managed to share the broadband connection using a LAN wire
.
The Internet is very important to both of us because it's the only source of entertainment.

This concludes our tour for this evening.
Good night.

Mon nombre de noms

Hi! My name is Khael.

Within my department in KLCC though, my name is Kael. Even though it states quite clearly on the Staff Movement board that my name is Khael, everyone spells it Kael. So, my name appears on the whiteboard of all departmental meetings as Kael.

My department manager is quite convinced I'm the singer Kaer, just because my name sounds like his. So you can also call me Kaer.

One of the tasks that I'm usually asked to do as an intern is to make phone calls to other departments. When I call someone, I usually introduce myself as Khael. But 99% of the time people will mistake that for Khairul. So I'll also accept Khairul.

Yesterday, I called another staff member from Sabah, and despite saying my name was Khael twice, he thought my name was Khairil. Therefore, I shall also answer to Khairil.

Today, I went to the laudromat. The girl behind the counter was an Indonesian girl. When she asked for my name, I knew if I said Khael, she wouldn't get it. So, I asked Hafizuddin for an alternate name.

Dengan selambanye Hafiz memberitahu perempuan itu namaku Jon. So now, if you call me Jon pun I'll answer. Hehe.

It's nice to have many names. :-)

Le baccalauréat:)

Ni la hidup orang bujang. Immediately after work, I drove my car back to Kg. Dato' Keramat. Changed my clothes. Walked to Damai LRT and took the train back down to Ampang Park.

All that crap, demi nak pakai wireless.

Haaaaaa~ :)

Since this is the ONLY effing place where I can get free Internet, I think I'll be here A LOT from now on. Hehe :D

Khael à KL

I arrived at Kg. Dato' Keramat on Sunday. Turns out my car is quite hardy over long distances. It might not be a Ferrari, but I love my car ^_^

Anyway, after initially getting lost, I finally found the house. It's not that difficult really. One just needs to find KLCC. I think I could walk to KLCC from my place if I wanted to, but I haven't tried, nor do I want to. Hehe.

This was the room I was renting. As you can probably tell, it's previous occupants weren't really neat. Anyway, with my roommate Hafizuddin's help, we managed to turn that load of crap into...

Tada! *clap clap clap*
Not bad for a bunch of guys, eh?

This is the view I get from my place at night.

However, I think me and Hafizuddin are going to move pretty soon though. I honestly think I can find a much better place for the price we're paying ;-)

Anyhow, first week at work was OK. Apart from getting lost in the building on the first day (couldn't quite understand how the lifts worked), everything's been fine. I still get a thrill from making the doors open by scanning my namecard on the touch pad, though I daresay I'll soon get sick of that.

KLCC from the stairs leading to the LRT station at 6.53 in the morning.
I have to be at KLCC that early because it's the only time I can get an LRT which isn't full of people.

And this is the KL skyline from Level 75. My department, the Business Planning Department, is on Level 23. You can't see anything from Level 23, which is why I had to go up to 75 to get this. Hehe.

I'm still getting used to life in KL. The food's expensive. The traffic is crazy. On top of that, my house has no TV and no Internet, which explains why it can get awfully lonely at night. I'm usually already in bed by 10pm, dying to get to work so I can meet my mates. Hahaha!

On the bright side, things can only go better from here! Now this is an adventure! :-)
